Professional Experience

As the leader of the Surplus Lines and Reinsurance Coalition (SLR) for several years, Maria has successfully advocated for the passage of the Non-Admitted and Reinsurance Reform Act (NRRA) in the House as well as championing that same effort in the Senate. This legislation was recently incorporated into the larger Financial Services Regulatory Reform Act that passed both the House and Senate (HR 4173 and S. 3217) in 2010 and is expected to become law shortly.

Maria was also deeply involved this Congress with aspects of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) on behalf of several clients, which passed the House and the Senate this Congress. This groundbreaking legislation was signed into law in March of 2010 by President Obama. On behalf of a coalition of diabetes stakeholders, Maria also successfully campaigned for five years straight for language in Appropriations legislation to ensure stakeholders maintained access to the best products. 

Maria was also involved in the passage of the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA). Maria has also provided Congressional testimony and briefings on related issues, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and on the Nonadmitted and Reinsurance Reform Act (NRRA).
