The expected regulation of greenhouse gases represents significant challenges and opportunities for much of the commercial sector. The role of carbon credits and carbon offsets, both domestic and international, will have a tremendous impact on which entities will face hardships versus those that will thrive. Carbon credits represent an allowable volume of GHG emissions, while carbon offsets would potentially reward those driving innovation who are able to reduce or avoid GHG emissions above and beyond what is required. As both Congress and the EPA continue to work toward establishing the legal framework to implement some form of climate change policy, the role, allocation and eligibility of carbon offsets and credits will go a long way in shaping the direction of new energy technologies and practices.
B&D Consulting’s energy, climate and environment professionals have extensive experience working with climate change legislation. Our professionals understand the issues surrounding the Congressional debate and the federal rulemaking process. We have professional experience working with the committees, members and staff engaged on these issues and the federal regulatory agencies which are charged with implementing climate change regulations.
Recent examples of our experience include:
- Represented a stakeholder in the agriculture sector to successfully include language in legislation which would grant eligibility to its technology as a carbon offset, potentially creating a new revenue stream for the company and avoiding potential negative consequences
- Drafted language and advocated for changes to ensure recycling of older refrigerants garnered credit, creating an additional financial incentive for our client and other companies to help remove older, ozone-depleting refrigerants from existing products
- Participated as a speaker in international carbon offsets and trading conferences in South America and Asia
