Below are examples of our work bringing together universities and surrounding areas to help advance not only education but also the efforts of the local community:
- Communities prosper when the principal institutions of a community have a shared vision and work to advance the community. B&D Consulting has been working to advance university and community initiatives for more than 20 years, playing key roles in the development of now-strong relationships between institutions of higher education and the towns they call home. B&D Consulting has assisted one such community in building a model "town and gown" partnership that has yielded more than $40 million in direct federal funding, which included the development of a multi-modal facility of benefit to both the university community and local residents.
- In one college town, B&D Consulting has brought together the university and the surrounding city to advance a number of key education and downtown redevelopment projects. One such project is currently bringing together city providers of after-school programs and developing a coordinated, evidence-based approach for addressing the needs of at-risk youth. The result of the project will be a distinct model for university and community collaboration that can be adopted elsewhere.
- Many rural areas are struggling to significantly attract and recruit new, talented teachers for elementary and secondary schools. Often, school districts in rural areas have taken to recruiting out of state – if not out of country – to fill positions in high needs schools. Recognizing this challenge, a client partnership came to B&D Consulting to get assistance in funding a rural teacher shortage initiative. The program, which would bring university students to rural schools, not only provides student teachers more opportunities, but gives elementary and secondary students in high-needs schools exposure to a new generation of teachers who are eager to make a difference. B&D Consulting helped this program get underfoot by securing the client nearly $2 million in federal funding.
- For nearly 10 years prior to the establishment of its Washington office, B&D Consulting handled the federal relations function for a leading research university and its medical school complex. These services included federal agency and congressional affairs, as well as other higher education sector activities. During this period, B&D Consulting achieved more than $60 million in federal funding for research, capital and education program initiatives. These accomplishments included approximately $10 million to convert a research cyclotron to a medical proton therapy use, capital and research funding for medical school, grants for multiple basic research initiatives, and funding for joint research and development projects in partnership with a major defense facility.
